Recent Interesting Science Articles (September ’10)

Three articles this month and all of them have something to do with biology. The first one is about how some chimpanzees in Africa have learned to recognize and disable traps laid by humans. The second is a statistical analysis of divorce rates sorted according to occupation. The last one is less of a formal article and more of a blog post. It’s about the unexpected benefits of being exposed to, well, human semen, of all things.

The chimpanzee article is from the BBC and talks about a groups of chimpanzees in the rainforests of Guinea who appear to have learned how to identify traps laid by human hunters and safely disable them without getting hurt in the process. They appear to be aware of how the different components of a snare trap come together and know which parts are safe to touch and which parts are dangerous. This has explained the observation that chimpanzees in that area rarely get injured by traps.

How to be an Ex-Masturbator

This is just too awesome for words. Quoted from the page:

When God wants to take His message of deliverance across the globe, there is NO stopping Him.  Check out this feature of the EX Shirts on one of the fastest growing Christian Hip Hop magazines in the US: www.DaSouth.com. Also, hit up their new article, “Masturbation” It breaks down the lies behind masturbation, explains how this is actually a sin, and how we can be freed through Christ.

And if you need even more encouragement, check out ya girl Dameco’s latest blog entry, in which she fearlessly testifies to her struggle and victory over masturbation!

We pray that you will join us in breaking the silence on an issue that has stayed silent for too long. Be the first to boldly rock your Ex-Masturbator shirt and let’s change the world baby! Click below on one of the pictures to order your shirt.

My problem is that I can never tell if campaigns like this are serious or a deliberate attempt at humour. I know, I know, I’m a sick, sick person.

Recent Interesting Science Articles (January ’09)

Again, I’m a little late on this one, so apologies. Three articles for this one, two on different aspects of human nature, and one on cloning. It does seem that I’m focusing a lot on biology these days, but that’s because such articles are more interesting in how they shed light on the human condition and have more potential to fundamentally alter how we view life and the universe than yet another article showcasing some new technological development.

The first article is from The Economist and deals with measuring the difference between the levels of prejudice that people admit to and that they actually seem to have. It summarizes the findings of two different groups of researchers, one at the University of Chicago and the other at York University in Canada, who looked into the matter.

Porn industry asks for bailout

Since I spotted this both on LYN and QT3, I figured it was amusing enough to post. The adult entertainment industry in the United States has just asked the government for a bailout. The article writes:

“People are too depressed to be sexually active,” Flynt said in the statement. “This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex.”

“With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It’s time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly.”

Obviously, this is a tongue-in-cheek move made for publicity reasons rather than a serious grab for cash, though as one astute QT3 poster pointed out, they certainly wouldn’t say no if any cash were actually offered. After all, they’re only asking for US$5 billion, a mere drop in the ocean compared to what’s been doled out already. Still, it does highlight how arbitrary it would be if government’s simply dolled out public money to companies that complained about being unable to survive a downturn. Companies are meant to compete in how well they deliver to consumers what they really want, not in how good they are at persuading public officials to hand them cash.

Sex Cards in The Witcher

I’m now playing the recently released Enhanced Edition of The Witcher. I’d originally bought the game at the beginning of year but put off playing it after reports came in about its lack of polish, garbly translation from the original Polish, frequent crashes and extremely long loading times. The Enhanced Edition of the game, which was made available as a free download to customers who had already purchased the original, fixes many of those problems, and I’m happy to say that even though there are still too many crashes for my comfort, I’m very happy with the game. I’ll write a full review when I’m finished with it, but so far, the game easily matches Mass Effect.

One of the most controversial aspect of The Witcher are the infamous sex cards. As an M-rated game, it presents plenty of opportunities for sexual activities, and it’s fair to say that the protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, is more than a bit of a ladies’ man. Each time you manage to bed a lady in the game, an entry is recorded in your journal together with a “sex card” of the lady in question, something like a collectible card. I was leery of this aspect of the game at first, but after having played the game for over a week now, I have to say that it’s damn refreshing to play a no-holds-barred, mature RPG that doesn’t skirt around sex and morality for once.

I note however that the copy of the game I purchased in Malaysia turns out to be the U.S. version, which is censored. The original Polish and European versions of the game had uncensored sex cards and in-game textures. Of course, this being the Internet age and all, it’s easy enough to get a look at the uncensored versions if you know where to look.
