Bat hitches ride on space shuttle

This has got to be the funniest item in the news all week. A bat apparently was clinging onto the side of external fuel tank of the space shuttle Discovery during its take-off on Sunday. Unfortunately everyone is pretty sure the would-be space traveller is now dead.

  1. Did someone actually see this bat or was it detected by on board instruments. If they already knew it was there why didnt they chase it before the launch?

  2. The article does mention that the pre-flight team that was charged with visually inspecting the exterior surface of the shuttle noticed the bat and hoped that it would fly away before the launching. It was probably too high up to chase away or something.
